Athlete Spotlight: Melissa Alexander

While Melissa certainly made some body composition changes, watching Melissa return to being a competitive athlete was really the most exciting. Below are just a few of her achievements. Read on to see what Melissa had to say about her experience working with Copper State FIT.

All my life I’ve been an athlete. Growing up, in Alaska, we had to be active through all seasons and weather types. I spent winters skiing and snowboarding or playing basketball and volleyball in a gym. Summers were spent on the softball field or hiking and fishing. Because of my activity levels, I was easily able to maintain my shape and fitness levels through the years.

I’ve continued to stay active into adulthood. I have been a CrossFit athlete for 5 years now while staying busy as a mom of 3 kids. However, like most folks, these things started catching up with me bit-by-bit.

Over the last few  years, even doing CrossFit 4-5 days per week, I noticed my clothes fitting a little tighter and I was shopping for the next size up. I really didn’t worry about it too much because CrossFit has a way of giving you some pretty incredible muscles! Especially in my legs and butt (which my husband would say, are my best features – LOL!). So, I continued doing what I was doing, eating pretty much whatever I wanted.

Then, in 2017, I started realizing that I didn’t love where I was headed. I didn’t feel like the athlete I once was. I began to notice changes on my body that I didn’t love and my performance in the gym had plateaued.  Several members at our gym started using Copper State FIT for their nutrition coaching and I was seeing their results. At one point, I had a consultation with Adam, but for one reason or another (or excuse), I just didn’t pull the trigger.

Fast forward to 2018, my husband and I booked a trip to Barbados! And, as if being in a bikini on the beach wasn’t motivation enough; just around the corner from that were a couple CrossFit events that I wanted to compete in. I called Adam and told him I WAS IN!

I was definitely apprehensive about “dieting” because it was not something I’d ever had to do. Not to mention the fact that we had weekend trips and other family events planned before our trip so I wasn’t sure how easy it was going to be. The accountability and flexibility was just what I needed.

Adam helped me change not just WHAT I was eating, but HOW I was eating too. I realized that I was more of “snacker” and I didn’t realize how many calories I was consuming by mindlessly snacking. I realized that I wasn’t eating whole or complete meals at all. I wasn’t good at meal planning or preparing but he taught me that it’s really easy to make quick “buildable” meals at home. Even on busy weeknights when I’m running kids to and from activities. Adam gave me the tools I needed to balance my meals,  achieve my nutrition goals and fuel my performance in the gym.

We took our Barbados vacation in November; I competed – and placed 1st – in the Granite Games; I’ve significantly improved my Crossfit Open scores and made over half-a-dozen personal bests on my lifts. This program and the coaching has helped me achieve my goals and so much more! My nutrition has become an important part of my life.

I’m happy with the way I look, how I feel and how my body is performing! I am confident that I have the knowledge and keys to achieve and maintain this lifestyle.
